Plaza Mayor

In the heart of Madrid, the imposing Plaza Mayor stands as a testament to the city's rich history and vibrant life. Surrounded by three-story buildings with uniform facades and arcades, this rectangular square has been the scene of countless events over the centuries.

A historic stage:

Built during the reign of Philip III (whose equestrian statue dominates the center of the square), the Plaza Mayor has witnessed bullfights, Inquisition auto-da-fés, public executions, and royal proclamations. Although its use has changed today, it remains an important meeting place for Madrilenians and tourists alike.

What do you love about Plaza Mayor?

  • Its architecture: The uniformity of the buildings with their balconies and arcades creates a feeling of harmony and grandeur.

  • The Casa de la Panadería: One of the most outstanding buildings with its colorful frescoes on the façade depicting mythological figures.

  • The statue of Philip III: In the center of the square, it commemorates the monarch under whose reign the building was completed.

  • The access arcades: Nine arches provide access to the square, each with its own charm.

Ambience and activities:

Today the Plaza Mayor is bustling with activity:

  • Markets: At special times, such as Christmas, a traditional Christmas market is set up. Collector's markets are also often held on Sunday mornings.

  • Cafés and restaurants: Under the arcades, numerous cafés and restaurants offer a place to have a drink and watch the hustle and bustle.

  • Street performers: You can often find musicians and other artists creating a lively atmosphere.

  • Events: The square continues to host various cultural events and festivities.

Although it can be busy at times, the Plaza Mayor is a landmark that captures the essence of Madrid. A stroll beneath its arcades and the sense of history emanating from its stones is an unforgettable experience.
