Plaza Mayor
In the heart of Madrid, the imposing Plaza Mayor stands as a testament to the city's rich history and vibrant life. Surrounded by three-story buildings with uniform facades and arcades, this rectangular square has been the scene of countless events over the centuries.
A historic stage:
Built during the reign of Philip III (whose equestrian statue dominates the center of the square), the Plaza Mayor has witnessed bullfights, Inquisition auto-da-fés, public executions, and royal proclamations. Although its use has changed today, it remains an important meeting place for Madrilenians and tourists alike.
What do you love about Plaza Mayor?
Its architecture: The uniformity of the buildings with their balconies and arcades creates a feeling of harmony and grandeur.
The Casa de la Panadería: One of the most outstanding buildings with its colorful frescoes on the façade depicting mythological figures.

The access arcades: Nine arches provide access to the square, each with its own charm.
Ambience and activities:
Today the Plaza Mayor is bustling with activity:
Markets: At special times, such as Christmas, a traditional Christmas market is set up. Collector's markets are also often held on Sunday mornings.
Cafés and restaurants: Under the arcades, numerous cafés and restaurants offer a place to have a drink and watch the hustle and bustle.
Street performers: You can often find musicians and other artists creating a lively atmosphere.
Events: The square continues to host various cultural events and festivities.
