Día de la Hispanidad
October 12th is a date marked in red on the calendar in Spain and many Spanish-speaking countries. It is Hispanic Heritage Day (Día de la Hispanidad), Spain's national holiday, a day that celebrates the richness of our history, culture, and ties to a global community of more than 500 million people.
On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus set foot in America for the first time, an event that marked the beginning of a cultural, social, and economic exchange that would transform the world. Today, the celebration goes beyond the mere remembrance of the Discovery of America. It is a tribute to the diversity and shared heritage that unites Spanish-speaking nations.
The great military parade
The heart of the celebration in Madrid is the impressive military parade that runs along one of the capital's main thoroughfares, Paseo de la Castellana . Thousands of people gather on the sidewalks to see the various units of the Armed Forces, the Civil Guard, the National Police, as well as members of the Royal Guard, marching with a firm step.
The parade is not only a display of discipline and order, but also a visual and aural spectacle. The sky fills with color with the flight of the Eagle Patrol , the Air Force planes that draw the Spanish flag with smoke in the sky. The soundtrack is provided by military marches that resonate throughout Paseo de la Castellana, thrilling the audience.
The King, Queen, and Princess of Asturias, along with the highest authorities of the State, preside over the military parade, and the day culminates with a reception at the Royal Palace.
A day of open doors and tradition
For many, this day is an opportunity to enjoy a family holiday, take advantage of the good weather, and enjoy the festive atmosphere that permeates the country.
Hispanic Heritage Day is much more than a parade; it's a day to remember that Spanish culture has traveled and lives on in the Americas, and to celebrate the ties that unite us as a community. It's an open day for both Spaniards and all those who feel part of the Hispanic community.
Have you ever seen the parade in Madrid?
