Vinos de Madrid

When we think of traditional tapas in Madrid, the first image that usually comes to mind is a very cold, expertly poured glass of draft beer. However, Madrid is also an extraordinary and surprising wine-producing region that boasts its own Protected Designation of Origin: D.O. Vinos de Madrid. Created officially in 1990, this appellation has undergone a wonderful, silent revolution in recent decades, thanks to the commitment of young, passionate winemakers dedicated to recovering old mountain vineyards and indigenous grape varieties that express the Madrid terroir with absolute purity.

Ordering a local wine during your tapas route not only directly supports regional producers but also elevates your gastronomic experience through pairings full of personality, typicality, and unique nuances.

The Four Subzones of the D.O. Vinos de Madrid

To become a true expert at the bar and know exactly what to order, it is helpful to know the four geographical subzones that make up the denomination, as each possesses distinct soil and climate characteristics:

  1. San Martín de Valdeiglesias Subzone: Located in the far southwestern corner of the province, in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos. Here, granitic soils and a high mountain climate reign. This is the sacred territory of the red Garnacha (producing elegant, subtle wines with notes of wild red fruit and floral touches) and the white Albillo Real grape (a white jewel producing aromatic, rich wines with hints of honey and white fruit). An outstanding example of this area is the creations of the prestigious Bodegas Bernabeleva.

  2. Arganda Subzone: The largest subzone, located in southeastern Madrid. Its clayey soils are ideal for Tempranillo (locally known as Tinto Fino) and the white Malvar grape, which yields highly fresh and versatile wines.

  3. Navalcarnero Subzone: In the southern part of the territory, notable for its sandy soils that produce silky, balanced, and friendly red wines based mainly on the Garnacha variety.

  4. El Molar Subzone: The most recent addition, located to the north of the region, characterized by high altitudes that contribute exceptional freshness, acidity, and minerality to the wines.

Madrid Food & Wine Pairing Suggestions

  • White Albillo Real Wine: Try it with a portion of grilled pig's ear or Madrid-style tripe. The surprising oiliness and structure of this white wine cuts through the richness of the meats masterfully.

  • Red Garnacha from Gredos: The ideal companion for a platter of cured Guadarrama sheep's milk cheese, oxtail croquettes, or grilled red meats. Its wild fruit freshness balances rich, heavy flavors perfectly.

  • White Malvar Wine: Pair it with fried squid or anchovies in vinegar. Its refreshing citric acidity enhances marine flavors excellently.

Next time you approach a Madrid counter, dare to ask the bartender: "Do you have any wines from D.O. Madrid?" and let yourself be seduced by the liquid flavor of our region.
