Just over an hour from the capital, the picturesque village of Buitrago del Lozoya stands as a living postcard from the Middle Ages. Nestled in a spectacular meander of the Lozoya River, this destination is the perfect getaway for lovers of history, nature, and photography, offering a fortified heritage that is unique in the Community of Madrid.

📜 The Walled Enclosure: History and Impregnable Architecture

The most notable feature of Buitrago del Lozoya is, undoubtedly, its walls of Moorish origin, the only ones in the entire Madrid region to be fully preserved. This fortification, which completely surrounds the old town, has been declared a National Monument and transports you directly back to medieval times.

🚶 Walking the Adarve (Wall Walkway)

  • The Experience: Walking along the adarve (the wall's walkway or paseo de ronda) is an essential activity. This path atop the wall offers spectacular views of the village, the rooftops, and above all, the Lozoya River, which embraces the town in a 180-degree loop.

  • Access: Access to the walkway usually involves a small fee and is subject to specific hours for security reasons. It is accessed from the castle area.

🏰 The Mendoza Castle

The Castillo de los Mendoza (also known as Buitrago Castle) dominates the landscape and is an imposing 15th-century Gothic-Mudéjar style fortress. It was the residence of the influential Mendoza family.

  • Architecture: Its seven towers (square, round, and pentagonal) are particularly striking, giving it a unique silhouette. Although parts of the interior were left in ruins after a fire, it is still used as a setting for cultural activities and historical reenactments.

  • Main Location: Vicinity of Plaza de la ConstituciĂłn, s/n.

🌉 The Old Bridge

Known also as the Puente del Arrabal, this medieval stone bridge completes the fortified complex. Crossing it allows you to view the village from the other side of the river, offering the most photogenic perspective of the walls and the castle.

🎨 The Unexpected Cultural Gem: The Picasso Museum

In addition to its impressive military legacy, Buitrago houses a completely unexpected cultural treasure: the Picasso Museum - Eugenio Arias Collection.

  • The Connection: The collection was donated by Eugenio Arias, Pablo Picasso's personal barber for over 25 years and a native of the village.

  • Content: The collection includes drawings, lithographs, ceramics, and above all, a series of emotional dedications and personal works that Picasso gave to his friend. It is an intimate look into the life of the artist from Málaga.

📍 Museum Address: C/ de la Coracha, 14, 28730 Buitrago del Lozoya, Madrid.

🏞️ Landscapes to Fall in Love With: Nature in the Sierra

The natural surroundings of Buitrago, in the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama, are just as worth seeing as its history.

  • The Lozoya Meander: The river creates a natural environment of great beauty, ideal for hiking. We recommend exploring the path that circles the walled enclosure to appreciate its scale.

  • Riosequillo Reservoir: Very close to the village is this reservoir, which in summer hosts one of the largest natural swimming pools in the Community of Madrid (recreational area). It is the perfect complement to a day trip.
